What is Oncology Massage? |
Massage in general can be helpful in reducing stress
and in relaxing the muscles and nerves and can address various symptoms such as pain, fatigue, anxiety, nausea, and headaches. Oncology Massage is designed to take into consideration the effects of treatments and side effects people often go through with chemo, radiation, various surgeries, and other treatments and procedures. |
Oncology Massage TherapistsOncology Massage Therapists have special training in how to give an effective, safe, and comfortable massage for their clients. For instance, they would not put pressure on tumor sites, or they might use especially light touch in certain areas of the body. They might be careful about how joints are moved or adapt to changes needed in the client's position during massage. Everyone has different needs, so each massage is tailored to the client's needs for each session.
http://s4om.org (The Society for Oncology Massage) Is massage safe for people with cancer?Skilled massage therapy is safe for people with cancer and will not spread their disease. Years ago there was a belief that massage would spread cancer by increasing circulation. This myth has not held up to what science and medicine now know about how cancer spreads. If cancer spread was simply due to active circulation, then exercise and movement would not be encouraged either. Instead Oncologists usually encourage exercise and movement for their clients. How do I make an appointment for Oncology Massage or Oncology Coaching? Call my office at 1-815-633-5553 (land line) or e-mail me at energy819@aol.com with Oncology Appointment in the subject line. I will take a brief history and if seeking massage therapy, I will ask you to let your Oncologist or current physician know you are receiving massage. I would also be happy to give your physicians more specific information about Oncology Massage or Oncology Coaching. |
Benefits of Massage TherapyOncology Massage can help to reduce pain and discomfort, help people sleep better, and reduce anxiety and stress. Massage can also increase a person's overall awareness of the body and how the body feels, and can reduce fatigue, nausea, and depression. We know this because our clients often tell us that they have fewer symptoms after massage, and because there is a small but growing body of research that supports this. Also, many Cancer Treatment Centers now incorporate massage therapy as part of their integrative health services to clients.
Oncology Coaching Cancer can be unnerving, emotionally devastating, and disruptive to almost any balance and normal routine your life. Coaching can provide an opportunity for you to tune in to your internal resources and inner knowing--to search out what gives you meaning and to see more clearly what you value in your life--so you can set realistic goals for now and in the near future--as you negotiate through the cancer journey as a client or family member. The coaching I provide offers you support for all or any part of the entire cancer journey from the diagnostic and treatment phases and afterwards. It can give you tools for each phase of the journey--whatever your state of health or illness--such as using a 1-10 scale to explore a life goal, using guided imagery for relaxation and renewal, reviewing your life story, looking at what nourishes you in your life, exploring options for changing your routine or activities to better meet your needs, exploring your your spiritual resources through meditation, looking at priorities for enhancing your relationships or for pursuing a new personal or professional venture or "adventure" that is especially suited to you at this time or one that could fulfill your "bucket list". I look forward to being a partner on the path with you! |
